2006 ACURA KEY WEST RACE WEEK RECAP
For one design, one choice comes to mind — the Melges 32. It has officially set the precedent for speed, fun and competitive high performance racing. Heads were turning as Marty Kullman at the helm for Mike Carroll on New Wave burned up the course in their supersonic Melges 32. Mike and Marty are more notably known for their tremendous success in the Melges 24 Class, however this time they decided to race their Melges 32. Their perseverance and determination led them on to win top honors! Hot on his heals was Jeff Ecklund on Star placing second overall, followed by Tim Kimpton from Stamford, Connecticut on Crash Test Dummies.
Teams traveled from all over including Rick Orchard from Flowery Branch, Georgia; Beck Swanson from Milford, Connecticut; Mick Shlens from King Harbor, California; John Cooper from Cane Hill, Missouri and all the way from the UK - Jonathan Mooney! Congratulations to everyone for making the journey to Key West making the Melges 32 a more exciting Class of boats!
RICK ORCHARD AND THE GRINS TEAM THROW
A MIDWINTER PARTY
As if the excitement and top notch racing wasn't enough, M32 owner Rick Orchard celebrated with a midwinter party on Wednesday night of the regatta. All the teams, owners and families gathered for an amazing spread of food and drink, including new stated M32 Party Class Rule — must serve beer and brats! A special thanks goes to Rick and his crew who served as the perfect hosts for a great party!
