JEFF ECKLUND IS 2006 MELGES 32
NATIONAL CHAMPION
CONGRATULATIONS. Jeff Ecklund on STAR is the very first Melges 32 National Champion, "It's great being the first Melges 32 National Champion," he said. "The class is great and it's a growing class full of really good sailors."
Nine M32s lined-up for a total of ten championship races all with the title in sight especially, second place finishers Marty Kullman (helm) and Mike Carroll on New Wave. "This racing is just as good, and just as tight as racing the Farr 40. And, you don't have to spend $500,000 to do it." said Kullman. Recently crowned J.80 World Champion Glenn Darden and Reese Hillard onboard HOSS were amongst this strong breed of competitors, "The boat has a lot of horsepower which makes it very fun to sail. The sea conditions in Newport were a good test for the boat. We hit 19kts coming in on Saturday, which was a great way to end the day's racing." commented Darden.
This was a truly international fleet with entries from all over the world and around the country - Geoff Masters from Australia, Joe Woods from the UK, Rick Orchard from Duluth, Georgia; John Cooper from Springfield, Missouri; Walter Kennedy from Charlotte, North Carolina and Doug Croker from Easton, Maryland.
A special thanks to all the competitors for traveling the distance. The New York Yacht Club was the perfect host! A great time was had by all.
